Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practices like Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, and TCM remedial massage have all risen in Australia as a mainstream health choice. More and more people are turning towards holistic healing practices because they want a holistic way to treat pain and chronic illness.
TCM is a coherent health care system of clinical assessment, diagnosis and treatment based on Chinese medical theory and practice. It is supported by theories developed over thousands of years. If you’ve been considering a career in TCM, you’re probably wondering where a bachelor’s degree could take you.
At Sydney Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SITCM), our courses will open many doorways for prospective students and are fully accredited by Australia’s higher education regulator and relevant health regulator (the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia). We’ve seen many students graduate and start fulfilling lifelong careers. As a top choice for studying TCM in Australia, we’ve compiled a list of career opportunities available to students who study with us.
An acupuncturist inserts sterile, hair-thin needles into specific places on the body to, from a Chinese medicine perspective, help relieve pain, reduce stress, and promote overall wellness. With a bachelor’s degree, you’ll be qualified to practice as an acupuncturist, registered with Australia’s Higher Education Regulator (AHPRA) and the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia (CMBA). You’ll learn about acupuncture techniques alongside human anatomy, with a focus on both theory and practical experience. This degree is a qualified pathway for becoming an acupuncturist.
A practitioner assesses and prescribes herbal medicine to patients to help with their treatment. They meet with people to discuss their symptoms and medical history before adjusting treatment plans through individualised formulas. In order to dispense and prescribe herbal medicines, you must be qualified with a formal education. SITCM’s Bachelor of Chinese Medicine program educates students in core subjects such as herbal formula theory, which is then supported by real-world clinical observation.
Many of our students have gone on to open their own independent practices. As a private practitioner, you get to choose your own hours, client base, and offered services (i.e. acupuncture or herbal medicine). As this role requires extensive industry experience, many graduates first work within an existing clinic to progress towards this goal.
From our degree, you could work in product development or a sales role within pharmaceutical and herbal companies. Our BTCM includes units in research methods, TCM pharmacology, and pathology to support this. As a product developer, you’ll apply TCM herbal knowledge to formulate and run quality checks on herbal products. Although this role isn’t patient-facing, it is essential in ensuring people have access to quality treatments.
If you’re more interested in guiding people than delivering clinical assessments, you should consider becoming a wellness advisor. You will deliver preventative health advice supported by Chinese Medicine knowledge. This may include nutrition guidance, stress management strategies, and general lifestyle advice to support someone’s holistic wellbeing.
Give yourself the best chance of success by benefiting from educators with extensive expertise. At SITCM, we’ve educated the next generation of TCM practitioners for over 35 years. By providing high-quality education in industry knowledge and professional competencies, as well as in health science fields, we remain a top choice in Australia for those looking to study TCM.
